IELTS Academic Reading gives you 60 minutes for 3 passages and 40 questions — about 90 seconds each, with no extra time to transfer answers. Band 7 needs 30 correct out of 40. Most candidates do not lose marks because their English is weak; they lose them by reading every passage in full and running out of time.
Band by band: what actually changes
Each step below is the specific thing standing between one band and the next. They are cumulative — the band 7 work does not help while the band 6 problem is still there.
23/40
Stop reading the passage first
প্যাসেজ আগে পুরোটা পড়বেন না
At band 5 the usual pattern is reading the whole passage carefully, then starting the questions with twenty minutes gone. Read the title and the first line of each paragraph, then go straight to question 1 and hunt for its answer. The passage is a reference document, not a story you have to finish.
- Give each passage 20 minutes and move on even if unfinished
- Answer every question — there is no penalty for a wrong guess
- Do the question types that run in passage order first
27/40
Learn what the paraphrase looks like
প্যারাফ্রেজ চিনতে শিখুন
Cambridge never repeats the question's words in the passage — that is the whole test. 'Cheaper' becomes 'less costly', 'young people' becomes 'adolescents'. Candidates stuck at 6 are scanning for the exact word and skipping the sentence that holds the answer.
- Underline the content words in the question, then think of two synonyms before you scan
- Watch for the sentence that answers in different words
- Numbers and names are the exception — those are not paraphrased
30/40
Fix True/False/Not Given and Matching Headings
TFNG আর Matching Headings ঠিক করুন
These two types account for most of the marks lost between 6.5 and 7. Not Given is not 'I could not find it' — it is a finding that the passage takes no position. And a heading has to describe the whole paragraph, not the striking example inside it.
- No contradiction written in the passage means Not Given, never False
- Summarise each paragraph in your own words before reading the headings
- Check qualifiers: all, only, always, the first
35/40
Precision, not speed
গতি নয়, নির্ভুলতা
At this level timing is solved and accuracy is the constraint. Marks go on spelling in completion questions, on plural forms, and on exceeding the word limit. 'NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS' means three words scores zero even when the meaning is right.
- Copy the word exactly as spelled in the passage
- Count the words in every completion answer
- Keep the singular or plural the passage used
The traps যেখানে নম্বর যায়
-
The word-limit zero সীমা ভাঙলে শূন্য
Three words where two were allowed scores nothing, however correct the meaning.
-
Not Given read as False Not Given-কে False ভাবা
The absence of information is never a contradiction.
-
Copying a misspelling ভুল বানানে লেখা
In completion tasks the answer is in the passage — spell it the way it appears.

The other papers
IELTS Listening
লিসেনিং
Band 7 = 30/40. A misspelled word you heard perfectly still scores zero.
IELTS Writing
রাইটিং
Task 2 is worth two thirds of your Writing band. Spend 40 of the 60 minutes on it.
IELTS Speaking
স্পিকিং
Accuracy is one of four criteria. Silence while you search for the perfect word costs more than the imperfect word would have.
