Accuracy is one of four criteria. Silence while you search for the perfect word costs more than the imperfect word would have.

IELTS Speaking practice on IELTS Mates

IELTS Speaking ১১-১৪ মিনিটের, তিনটি অংশে, আর নম্বর হয় চারটি জিনিসে: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, আর Pronunciation। বাংলাদেশি প্রার্থীদের সবচেয়ে বড় সমস্যা মাথার ভেতরে বাংলা থেকে ইংরেজিতে অনুবাদ — যা থেমে থেমে বলার কারণ হয়, আর সেটিই Fluency-তে নম্বর কাটে।

IELTS Speaking runs 11–14 minutes across three parts and is scored on four things: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. For Bangladeshi candidates the biggest single cost is translating from Bengali mid-sentence, which produces the hesitation that Fluency is marked down for.

Band by band: what actually changes

Each step below is the specific thing standing between one band and the next. They are cumulative — the band 7 work does not help while the band 6 problem is still there.

extend every answer

Never answer in one sentence

এক বাক্যে উত্তর দেবেন না

In Part 1 a one-word answer gives the examiner nothing to mark. Answer, then add a reason, then add an example. Three sentences is the minimum unit of a Part 1 answer.

  • Answer, reason, example — every time
  • If you do not know, say so in English and talk around it
  • Do not memorise Part 1 answers; examiners hear it immediately

stop translating

Think in English, imperfectly

ইংরেজিতেই ভাবুন, ভুল হলেও

Translating from Bengali produces a pause before every clause, and Fluency is marked on exactly that. A simpler sentence produced fluently scores higher than a complex one delivered in fragments.

  • Practise speaking for two minutes without stopping, accepting the errors
  • Learn fillers that buy time in English: that's a good question, let me think
  • Record yourself and count the pauses, not the mistakes

range and natural language

Idiomatic, not memorised

মুখস্থ নয়, স্বাভাবিক ভাষা

Band 7 needs some idiomatic language used naturally and the ability to speak at length without noticeable effort. Self-correcting constantly reads as lack of control, not care.

  • Use the Part 2 minute to write four bullet points, not sentences
  • Let small errors go — correcting every one breaks fluency
  • In Part 3 give an opinion and defend it, do not describe
78+

flexibility and pronunciation

Pronunciation features, not accent

অ্যাকসেন্ট নয়, উচ্চারণের বৈশিষ্ট্য

You are not marked on sounding British. You are marked on stress, rhythm and intonation being used to carry meaning, and on being easy to understand throughout.

  • Stress the content words, weaken the rest
  • Vary intonation to signal contrast and emphasis
  • Practise the sounds Bengali does not have: /v/ versus /w/, /θ/ in think
